This triangular shawl is worked from the top down and starts with a few stitches at the center back. 4 or 8 stitches are added every other row inside the border stitches and on either side of the center stitch until shawl body has reached the required size. A sideways worked edging is then attached to the live border stitches so that only 13 or 16 stitches are cast off when the edging is done.

Shawl Body

The shawl body is worked in stocking stitch with a lacy lattice filled with flower motifs. The flower motif is a traditional stitch pattern that dates back more than 150 years; my oldest source is a German book from the 1840's. Instead of working the lattice all over, you could knit just the flowers on the main part of the body, and then use the lattice for a border at the bottom. Shawl body can be worked entirely in garter stitch if so preferred.

There are several ways to start the shawl - choose the one you are the most comfortable with.

Start option 1:
Cast on 5 stitches. Knit across.
Set up row 1: k2 (border stitches), yo twice, k1 (center stitch), yo twice, k2 (border stitches)
Set up row 2: k2, (k1, p1) in the double yo, p1, (p1, k1) in the double yo, k2.
Continue with row 1 of chart.

Start option 2:
Provisionally cast on 2 stitches. Knit 6 rows. (3 ridges)
Set up row 1: k2 (border stitches), pick up and knit 3 stitches along the side of your rectangle (1 in each ridge, the middle one of these 3 stitches will be the center stitch), undo provisional cast on and place stitches on left needle, k2 (border stitches) (7 stitches in total)
Set up row 2: k2, purl to last 2 stitches, k2.
Set up row 3: k2, yo, (k1, p1) in the next stitch, yo, k1, yo, (p1, k1) in the next stitch, yo, k2.
Set up row 4: k2, purl to last 2 stitches, k2.
Continue with row 3 of chart.

Start option 3:
Cast on 5 stitches using the disappearing loop method. Tighten loop, but do not join to a circle; turn and knit across.
Set up row 1: k2 (border stitches), yo twice, k1 (center stitch), yo twice, k2 (border stitches)
Set up row 2: k2, (k1, p1) in the double yo, p1, (p1, k1) in the double yo, k2.
Continue with row 1 of chart.

After the set up rows, for a shawl with all-over lattice pattern (as shown in picture), continue knitting from chart A , or B if you prefer lattice for a border only.

Charts for shawl body are read bottom to top, right to left, and show even rows only.
Pattern repeats are marked in colour.

Odd rows (except where indicated otherwise) are worked like this: k2, (border stitches, not shown on chart), work chart once, k1 (center stitch, not shown on chart), work chart 2nd time, k2 (border stitches, not shown on chart).
All even rows: k2, purl,to last 2 stitches, k2. Work (p1, k1) in the double yarn overs.
If you knit very loosely you can replace the double yarn over with a single, but you must still work 2 stitches on the following even row.

If using chart A (all-over lattice): When you have completed row 28, repeat rows 15-28 for the required length of shawl body.
Knit rows 29-42 once before continuing with the edging. Do not break yarn.

If using chart B (lattice border): When you have completed row 36, repeat rows 21-36 for the required length of main part of shawl body. Knit rows 37-56 once. You now have 2 options:
Border Option 1: Continue with row 15-28 on chart A. Repeat rows 15-28 if needed.
Knit rows 29-42 once before continuing with the edging. Do not break yarn.
Border Option 2: Knit rows 29-42 of chart A once before continuing with the edging. Do not break yarn.

Edging

There 2 choices for the edging. An edging as shown in the picture above, or a slightly wider edging with a zig-zag ladder along the inner edge.
Both edgings are worked in garter stitch and use short rows to create fullness at shawl sides and center. You will work the edging back and forth, attaching it to the live stitches on shawl body as you work. You will probably find it easier to use a short straight needle to work the odd rows.

Charts for edging are read bottom to top, right to left, left to right and show all rows.

Edging without zig-zag ladder: Continuing with shawl body yarn cast on 13 stitches and start the edging by working rows 1-20 of chart C2.
Now work chart C1. Starting with row 1, work rows 1-16 repeatedly until there are 12 stitches left before the center stitch (last row should be a row 16).
Now work chart C3 as follows: Rows 1-16 4 times.
Rows 1-14 once.
Return to chart C1. Start with rows 15-16 and then repeat rows 1-16 until there are 6 stitches left of the shawl body (last row should be a row 14).
Next work rows 19-20 and 5-16 of chart C2, and rows 13-16 of chart C1.
Finish by knitting rows 21-22 of chart C2.
When you cast off on row 22, try to match the tension of the edging cast on.

Edging with zig-zag ladder: Continuing with shawl body yarn cast on 16 stitches and start the edging by working rows 1-4 of chart C4.
Next work rows 5-16 and 1-4 of chart C5.
Now work chart C4 again. Starting with row 5, work rows 5-20 repeatedly until there are 14 stitches left before the center stitch (last row should be a row 16).
Now work chart C5 as follows:
Rows 1-16 7 times.
Rows 1-6 once.
Return to chart C4. Start with rows 7-20 and then repeat rows 5-20 until there are 6 stitches left of the shawl body.
Next work rows 5-16 and 1-2 of chart C5.
Finish by knitting rows 19-22 of chart C4.
When you cast off on row 22, try to match the tension of the edging cast on.

Stitch up small slit at neck if you used start option 1; otherwise just secure yarn ends and block.
